How the president lost his lawyer license

Standards of conduct subject to sanctions depends on the state. One California attorney was recommended for disbarment when she married her ailing, elderly client for his fortune. The ABA says that a lawyer convicted of a felony or serious crime risks being disbarred.

The state bar association or court reviews any criminal conviction to determine whether it involved "moral turpitude," that is, whether it is a criminal act that reflects adversely on the lawyer's honesty, trustworthiness or fitness as a lawyer. State statutes differ as to what offenses constitute moral turpitude. However, the Washington State Legislature suggests that criminal convictions involving violence, dishonesty, corruption or breach of trust often are included.

The journey to redemption has also given him a new mission. The challenges he faced — of inspiration, technology and accessibility — were more than mountains for him to climb.
